Abu Ghraib is located immediately west of Baghdad and administratively belongs to the Baghdad Governorate. The city became globally known primarily through the prison of the same name, which was the scene of controversial events. Beyond this unfortunate notoriety, however, Abu Ghraib is a vital agricultural area irrigated by channels of the Euphrates. The region is famous for its dairy products and the Abu Ghraib Central Farm, which was once one of the most modern in Iraq. Strategically, the city lies on the major highway connecting Baghdad with the Jordanian and Syrian borders, making it a significant logistical hub. The population is predominantly rural, with tribal structures playing an important role in the social fabric. Geographically, Abu Ghraib marks the transition from the urban metropolis of Baghdad to the fertile rural plains of central Iraq. Despite the challenges of recent decades, the city remains an essential supplier of agricultural goods to the capital.
