Tana Toraja
Tana Toraja, located in the highlands of South Sulawesi, is one of Indonesia's most fascinating cultural destinations. The Toraja people maintain elaborate funeral rites that can last for days, involving entire communities. The deceased are often interred in hanging graves or rock-carved tombs, guarded by wooden effigies known as 'Tau Tau'. The iconic boat-shaped roofs of Tongkonan houses define the landscape, tucked away among emerald green rice terraces and misty mountains. Exploring the markets in Rantepao provides a glimpse into daily life and the trading of water buffaloes, which are central to their ceremonies. The region is also world-renowned for its excellent Toraja coffee. Reaching Tana Toraja usually involves a long but scenic bus ride from Makassar. The peak season for ceremonies is during July and August, which is also the best time to visit for the most stable weather.
