The Derawan Islands in East Kalimantan are a premier destination for divers and nature enthusiasts seeking remote tropical beauty. The archipelago consists of four main islands: Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban, and Maratua. A unique highlight is the landlocked jellyfish lake on Kakaban, where you can swim with four species of stingless jellyfish. Sangalaki is world-famous for its manta ray cleaning stations, while Derawan itself is a sanctuary for green sea turtles that often swim right beneath the overwater villas. The marine biodiversity here is staggering, with animated coral gardens and rare macro life. Dining focuses on fresh catches of the day and local Borneo flavors. Getting here requires a flight to Berau followed by a speedboat ride. The best time to visit is during the dry season from March to October. It has a rare chance to encounter marine megafauna in a pristine, secluded environment.
