Bogor Botanical Gardens (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Bogor Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor) are located in the heart of Bogor city in West Java and hold the distinction of being the oldest botanical garden in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1817 by Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt, a German botanist serving under the Dutch, the gardens now span an area of approximately 87 hectares. The site directly borders the Indonesian presidential palace, Istana Bogor, which originally served as the residence of the Dutch Governor-General. The collection features over 13,000 living plant specimens representing about 3,400 species, including rare orchids, towering palms, and the famous Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum). Historically, the gardens played a pivotal role in introducing economically significant crops to Indonesia, such as oil palms and rubber trees. The grounds are interlaced with numerous canals and ponds that contribute to a cool microclimate. Today, Kebun Raya Bogor remains a center for scientific research and a major recreational space for both local residents and international visitors.
