Jakarta Cathedral (Indonesia)

Weather…

The Jakarta Cathedral, officially named Gereja Santa Maria Pelindung Diangkat Ke Surga, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Jakarta. This impressive neo-Gothic structure was consecrated in 1901, replacing an earlier church that had collapsed in 1890. Designed by architect Antonius Dijkmans, the cathedral is characterized by its red brick facade and three distinctive iron spires. The two main spires reach a height of 60 meters, while the smaller one stands at 45 meters, symbolizing the strength of faith and the ascent of the spirit. The cathedral's location is highly symbolic, as it stands directly across from the Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. This proximity serves as a powerful testament to Indonesia's commitment to religious tolerance and the national philosophy of 'Bhinneka Tunggal Ika' (Unity in Diversity). Inside, the cathedral features beautiful stained glass, intricate wood carvings, and a museum on the upper floor that preserves the history of Catholicism in the Indonesian archipelago.
