Virupaksha Temple (India)

Weather…

The Virupaksha Temple is located in Hampi, Karnataka, and is a vital part of the Group of Monuments at Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, a form of Shiva, it is one of India's oldest continuously functioning temples, with its historical roots reaching back to the 7th century. During the peak of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th to 16th centuries, the temple underwent significant expansions and embellishments. Its most striking feature is the massive eastern gopuram (gateway tower), which rises 50 meters high across nine tiers. The temple's interior and exterior walls are adorned with intricate stone carvings depicting episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics. Despite the widespread destruction of Hampi by invaders in 1565, the Virupaksha Temple survived largely unscathed and remains a sacred pilgrimage destination today.
