Dal Lake (India)

Weather…

Dal Lake in Srinagar is the crown jewel of Jammu and Kashmir and stands as a primary symbol of the region's natural beauty. Covering an area of approximately 18 square kilometers, its shoreline is adorned with magnificent Mughal-era gardens, including Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh. The lake is famous for its floating gardens, known locally as 'Rad', where vegetables are cultivated on mats of vegetation, and for the traditional wooden boats called Shikaras. Another iconic feature is the intricate cedarwood houseboats, which gained popularity during the British colonial period when foreigners were prohibited from owning land in Kashmir. Geographically, the lake consists of four main basins: Bod Dal, Nagin, Gagribal, and Lokut Dal. While the average depth is around 1.5 meters, it reaches 6 meters at its deepest points. Beyond its role as a tourist hub, the lake supports a large community through fishing and water plant harvesting. In severe winters, the surface of the lake sometimes freezes over, transforming the landscape into a white expanse.

Best season
Spring through autumn is generally considered the best time to visit, offering blooming gardens, while winters provide a stark, chilly beauty when the water can partially freeze.
