Vatnsfjörður (Iceland)

Weather…

Vatnsfjörður on the northern shore of Breiðafjörður in the Westfjords is a site of exceptional historical rank, celebrated in the Icelandic sagas as the seat of powerful chieftains. During the settlement period, the site was settled by Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson, the man who named Iceland, who spent a harsh winter here. Later, it became the ancestral seat of the Vatnsfirðingar clan, one of the most influential family lines during the Sturlung Era in the 13th century. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the remains of a magnificent Viking Age longhouse and a smithy, underscoring the wealth and status of the inhabitants. The current church of Vatnsfjörður stands on foundations dating back to early Christian times. The protected location of the fjord and fertile soils made the site a handy center of power in an otherwise barren region. Vatnsfjörður uniquely combines the heroic legends of the sagas with tangible archaeological evidence.
