Skjaldfönn Ruins

Skjaldfönn is a historical farmstead located at the inner end of Ísafjarðardjúp in the Westfjords, now serving as a ruin site that recalls the harsh living conditions of past centuries. Mentioned in the Icelandic sagas, it was a significant agricultural operation for many generations in this secluded region. The ruins comprise the foundations of the main house and several outbuildings, constructed from local stone and turf. Due to extreme snow loads and avalanche risks, the farm was eventually abandoned, a common fate for many remote settlements in the Westfjords. Archaeological research on-site has unearthed tools and everyday items that shed light on the self-sufficient lifestyle of the inhabitants.
