The Grunnafjörður Wetland Reserve is located in western Iceland near the Akrafjall mountain, serving as a critical habitat for migratory bird species. The fjord is particularly vital as a stopover site for the Brent goose during its long migration between Arctic Canada and Europe. In 1996, Grunnafjörður was designated as a Ramsar site of international importance to ensure the preservation of its coastal biodiversity. The interaction between freshwater inflow from local streams and the saline sea water creates a unique brackish environment supporting specialized vegetation. Beyond geese, the area attracts common eiders, oystercatchers, and various waders. Conservation measures are strictly enforced to minimize human disturbance during peak migration and nesting periods.

Best season
Grunnafjörður wetland is best during spring and autumn migrations, especially May and September, when thousands of brent geese stop over on their way to Greenland. In summer, waders and ducks are also present.
Best time of day
Dusk is the most active time for the geese as they fly from roosts to feeding areas. During the day they often rest on the water, so morning and evening observation is most rewarding.
Etiquette
Stay on the paths and use existing observation hides to avoid disturbing the birds. Dogs must be kept on a lead, and walking on the mudflats is prohibited.
What to bring
A spotting scope with 20-60x magnification is handy for identifying distant geese and waders. Wellington boots or waterproof shoes are recommended as the paths can be wet.
Getting there
Grunnafjörður reserve is located near the Ring Road 1, about 40 km southwest of Reykjavík. A short gravel road leads to the parking area, from where a well-marked walking trail leads to the observation hides.
What to expect
The geese can be shy - a quiet seated position in the hide and patient waiting are key. Often it's worth staying for an hour or more to experience the large flocks coming in.
