Tsang Tai Uk, also known as Shan Ha Wai, is one of the most significant and well-preserved Hakka walled villages in Hong Kong. Completed around 1867 by Tsang Koon-man, a wealthy master stonemason, the complex was built as a secure residence for his extended clan. The architecture is a prime example of defensive design, featuring high walls made of solid granite and blue bricks, with fortified watchtowers at the corners to protect against pirate raids that were common in the Sha Tin valley at the time. The interior follows a strictly symmetrical layout with three parallel alleys, housing various residential units, courtyards, and a grand ancestral hall. Remarkably, the village is still inhabited by the descendants of the Tsang clan today, giving it a bustling sense of living history. The central courtyard serves as a gathering space for traditional festivals and weddings, while the stone carvings and architectural details reflect the prosperity of the founder. It remains a rare sanctuary of 19th-century rural life amidst the high-rise developments of modern Sha Tin.
