Pinewood Battery (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Pinewood Battery is a historic military site located within the lush Lung Fu Shan Country Park on Hong Kong Island. Situated at an elevation of 307 meters above sea level, it holds the distinction of being the highest coastal defense battery ever built in Hong Kong. Originally constructed by the British in 1901 to guard the western approaches to Victoria Harbour, the battery was later repurposed as an anti-aircraft site during the late 1930s to meet the changing threats of modern warfare. During the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941, the battery was heavily bombarded by Japanese air raids, leading to its eventual abandonment by the defending forces. Today, the ruins of the gun emplacements, barracks, and command posts remain remarkably intact, offering a haunting glimpse into the territory's wartime history. The site is now a focal point of a heritage trail, surrounded by a thriving forest ecosystem. Hikers frequent the area not only for its historical significance but also for the commanding views of the harbor and the outlying islands that the strategic vantage point provides.
