Bethanie Sanatorium (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Perched on a hillside in Pok Fu Lam, the Bethanie was established in 1875 by the Missions Étrangères de Paris (MEP) as a sanatorium for priests and missionaries working throughout East Asia. It was a pioneering institution for its time, providing a place of rest and recovery in Hong Kong’s subtropical climate. The architectural highlight is undoubtedly the Neo-Gothic chapel, featuring intricate stained glass and delicate stonework that survived decades of change. In the late 20th century, the site faced the threat of redevelopment but was eventually saved and leased to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. A meticulous restoration project followed, which earned a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2008. Declared a statutory monument in 2013, the Bethanie now houses a museum detailing its missionary past and serves as a unique venue for performances and ceremonies, blending its spiritual heritage with modern cultural education.
