Mount Davis Battery (Hong Kong SAR China)

Weather…

Mount Davis Battery stands on the westernmost hill of Hong Kong Island, originally constructed as a centerpiece of the territory's coastal defense system. Completed in 1912, it was designed to guard the western approaches to Victoria Harbour using five massive 9.2-inch breech-loading guns housed in deep concrete emplacements. During the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941, the battery became a primary target for Japanese heavy artillery and aerial bombardment. Despite sustained damage, the site remained operational until the final days of the conflict, when the guns were intentionally disabled by retreating British forces to prevent their capture. In the post-war era, the underground chambers and barracks provided temporary shelter for the local population before the site was eventually abandoned to the elements. Today, the ruins offer a surreal experience for hikers, as the encroaching jungle canopy and thick banyan roots wrap around the weathered concrete bunkers, command posts, and magazine rooms, overlooking the Lamma Channel.
