High West (502 m) is the westernmost of the Three Towers on Hong Kong Island, located in Lung Fu Shan Country Park. Its geology consists of granite and metamorphic rocks from the Cretaceous period. Historically, it housed a British naval signal station in the 19th century, used to monitor ship movements. During World War II, Japanese forces occupied and fortified the summit. The mountain is covered in tropical rainforest with abundant ferns and orchids, and serves as a stopover for migratory birds such as the Pacific golden plover. Average humidity is 80%. The Lung Fu Shan Nature Trail (2.5 km) provides educational displays about the local flora and fauna. From the peak, views extend over Western District, Lamma Island, and the Hong Kong International Airport. The mountain also supplies fresh water to the city through several streams.

Getting there
Frequently accessed by walking from the popular Victoria Peak area, a scenic and completely shaded path leads hikers towards the final steep staircase ascending directly to the top.
Best season
Late afternoon visits during the thoroughly clear autumn months are incredibly popular, offering hikers comfortable temperatures and a high chance of witnessing an impressive sunset.
Terrain & paths
While the initial approach is relatively flat, the final climb to the 494-meter summit consists of numerous steep, well-maintained steps that will heavily test your leg muscles.
What to bring
Breathable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, and a bright headlamp or flashlight are necessary if you plan to stay at the observation point to slowly watch the sunset over the sea.
Parking
Visitors generally utilize the commercial parking facilities at Victoria Peak or take the iconic tram, as there is absolutely no direct vehicular access to this adjacent peak.
Safety
Hikers should carefully pace themselves on the steep staircase to avoid severe exhaustion and ensure they have adequate artificial lighting for the descent if returning after dark.
Time needed
Starting firmly from the main peak complex, the complete round trip to this western observation point and back usually takes about one and a half to two and a half full hours.
