The Carenage (Grenada)

Weather…

The Carenage is the natural harbor of St. George's, Grenada, and forms the historic core of the capital. Its name derives from the French term 'carenage', meaning to careen ships for hull cleaning. The harbor was developed by the French in the 18th century as a naval base and later became a center for the spice trade, particularly nutmeg. The waterfront features restored colonial warehouses now housing boutiques and eateries. The harbor depth ranges from 6 to 10 meters, accommodating medium-sized vessels. It was the site of the 1779 capture of Grenada by French forces. Today, the Carenage serves as a marina for yachts and a focal point for tourism. The Sendall Tunnel connects it to the Esplanade.
