St. George's Anglican Church (Grenada)

Weather…

St. George's Anglican Church is a poignant landmark situated on a prominent hill overlooking the capital of Grenada. Originally completed in 1825, the church was a masterpiece of colonial architecture, built using local stone and ballast bricks from visiting ships. For nearly 180 years, its distinctive clock tower guided the rhythms of the city until the catastrophic arrival of Hurricane Ivan in 2004, which tore off its roof and gutted its interior. Today, the skeletal remains of the church stand as a powerful monument to the island's history and the raw power of nature. Visitors can walk among the historic walls, where sunlight streams through empty window arches, and examine the intricate marble plaques that survived the storm. The churchyard contains graves dating back to the late 18th century, offering a glimpse into the lives of the early settlers. Despite its ruined state, the site remains a deeply respected place of memory and provides one of the best vantage points for viewing the colorful harbor of St. George's below.
