Levera National Park occupies the northeastern tip of Grenada and stands as a crown jewel of the island's conservation efforts. Spanning coastal forests and mangroves, the park's centerpiece is a sprawling 18-hectare saltwater lagoon that serves as a sanctuary for a wide array of waterfowl and marine life. Since 2012, it has been recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The park is perhaps most famous for Levera Beach, which provides the most critical nesting habitat in Grenada for the endangered leatherback turtle. During the nesting season from March to August, these massive prehistoric reptiles haul themselves onto the sand under the cover of darkness to lay their eggs, a spectacle managed closely by conservationists. Visitors can hike through the diverse terrain, enjoy birdwatching by the lagoon, or take in the dramatic views of offshore volcanic islands like Sugar Loaf. It is a place where ecological sensitivity meets dramatic natural beauty, offering a glimpse into the wilder side of the Spice Isle.

Best season
The best time to visit Levera National Park is from March to July, when leatherback turtles nest on the beaches. Guided night walks are possible during this period. The dry season is also handy for birdwatching.
Best time of day
Early morning is the best time to watch birds at the lagoon, especially herons and kingfishers. For turtle watching, night tours between 8 PM and midnight are most successful.
Etiquette
Do not touch nesting turtles or eggs and do not use white light, as it disturbs the animals. Keep distance from turtles and follow park ranger instructions. Do not bring litter to the beach.
What to bring
For turtle watching, a flashlight with a red filter and sturdy footwear are required. Bring insect repellent, especially in the evening. Binoculars are helpful for birdwatching.
Getting there
Levera National Park is on the north coast of Grenada, about one hour from St. George's. Access is via a paved road, then a dirt road to the parking lot. From there, a short walk leads to the beach.
What to expect
Turtle watching requires a lot of patience, as the animals often come ashore late at night. Wait quietly and avoid sudden movements. Meeting a leatherback turtle is an unforgettable experience.
