Leaper's Hill (Grenada)

Weather…

Leaper's Hill, or 'Morne des Sauteurs' in French, is a site of immense historical gravity located on the northern coast of Grenada. In 1650, this 40-meter-high sea cliff became the site of a tragic final stand by the indigenous Carib (Kalinago) people against French colonial forces. According to historical accounts, the remaining Caribs chose to leap to their deaths from the precipice rather than submit to French rule and enslavement. This act of collective sacrifice gave the nearby town of Sauteurs its name, which translates to 'Leapers.' Today, a monument stands at the cliff's edge to honor the memory and defiant spirit of the Kalinago people. The site is situated behind the historic St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church and its graveyard, offering visitors a somber place for reflection alongside sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea and the distant Grenadine islands. It remains a powerful symbol of indigenous resistance and a reminder of the violent colonial struggles that shaped the history of the West Indies.
