Tholos of Delphi (Greece)

Weather…

The Tholos of Delphi is one of the most enigmatic and visually striking circular structures of ancient Greece, located within the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. Built between 380 and 360 BC by the architect Theodoros of Phocaea, this masterpiece showcases the transition and fusion of Greek architectural styles. The Tholos originally featured an outer ring of 20 Doric columns and an inner sanctum adorned with 10 Corinthian columns, a highly innovative layout for the period. While its precise function remains a subject of academic debate, it likely served as a sacred treasury or a shrine for specific religious rites. The builders utilized a striking combination of white Pentelic marble and dark Eleusinian limestone to create a dynamic visual contrast in its flooring and decorative elements. Today, three of the outer columns have been re-erected, forming one of the most photographed landmarks in Greece. Its graceful circular form against the rugged slopes of Mount Parnassus continues to inspire awe and curiosity about its original purpose and symbolic meaning.
