The Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace was one of the most significant religious centers of the ancient Greek world, home to the mysterious Samothracian Mysteries. Situated in a rugged valley at the foot of Mount Saos, the sanctuary was dedicated to deities known as the Cabeiri, who were protectors of seafarers. Unlike the Eleusinian Mysteries, initiation into the cult of Samothrace was open to everyone, regardless of social status or nationality. The architectural grandeur of the sanctuary flourished during the Hellenistic period under the patronage of Ptolemaic and Macedonian royalty. Key structures include the Arsinoeion, the largest covered rotunda in the ancient world, and the Hieron. The site gained world renown in 1863 with the discovery of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, a monumental marble statue of the goddess Nike now exhibited in the Louvre. The mystical atmosphere of the ruins still draws visitors seeking to connect with ancient spiritual traditions.

Visiting
The Sanctuary of the Great Gods on Samothrace is an archaeological site open to the public. You can explore the temple ruins and see a replica of the famous Winged Victory of Samothrace.
