Methoni Castle (Greece)

Weather…

The Methoni Castle, situated on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, is one of the most imposing medieval fortifications in Greece. Established by the Venetians in 1209, the castle served for centuries as a vital strategic base for maritime trade between Venice and the Levant, earning it the title of one of the 'Eyes of the Republic.' The complex occupies a peninsula separated from the mainland by a deep artificial moat and is enclosed by massive stone walls with a perimeter of approximately 1,500 meters. The most iconic feature is the Bourtzi, an octagonal sea tower built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, which served as both a prison and a lighthouse. Within the fortified area, visitors can find the ruins of a cathedral, Ottoman baths, and a granite column dedicated to the Venetian Doge Francesco Morosini. Its strategic location led to numerous sieges and shifts in control between Venetian, Ottoman, and French forces over the centuries.
