Preveza is located at the narrow entrance of the Ambracian Gulf in northwestern Greece, a city defined by its strategic naval importance and diverse cultural heritage. Its geographic position made it the site of the pivotal Battle of Actium in 31 BC, where Octavian's victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra altered the course of Roman history and led to the establishment of the nearby victory city, Nicopolis. Throughout the centuries, Preveza was contested by the Venetians and Ottomans, leaving behind a legacy of impressive fortifications such as the castles of Agios Andreas, Pantokrator, and Laskara. The modern city is unique for being connected to the southern mainland via the Aktio-Preveza Undersea Tunnel, which spans the channel at its narrowest point. The town center retains a traditional atmosphere with its pedestrianized 'Saitan Pazar' shopping district, neoclassical mansions, and a bustling harbor quay that serves as a major yachting destination. The surrounding wetlands of the Ambracian Gulf are protected under the Ramsar Convention, hosting significant biodiversity including dolphins and the rare Dalmatian pelican.
