Akrotiri (Thira) (Greece)

Weather…

Akrotiri, located on the island of Santorini, is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Aegean and is often called the 'Pompeii of the Bronze Age'. The city was a flourishing center of the Minoan civilization until it was completely buried under a thick layer of ash following the catastrophic eruption of the Thera volcano in the 17th century BC. This volcanic debris preserved the settlement in an extraordinary state for millennia, including multi-story buildings, complex drainage systems, and magnificent frescoes. Excavations initiated in 1967 by Spyridon Marinatos revealed a highly sophisticated society with extensive trade connections across the Eastern Mediterranean. Among the most spectacular finds are the vivid wall paintings, such as the 'Spring Fresco' or the 'Boxing Boys', which offer deep insights into the aesthetics, religion, and daily lives of the inhabitants. Unlike Pompeii, no human remains or valuable jewelry have been found at Akrotiri so far, suggesting that the residents were warned in time and were able to flee. Today, a modern roof structure protects the excavation site, allowing visitors to walk through the ancient streets of this long-lost world.
