Fira is the capital of Santorini, spectacularly perched on the rim of a 400-meter-high caldera. The town was established in the 18th century after a catastrophic earthquake destroyed the former capital, Skaros. Its architecture is defined by brilliant white houses, blue-domed churches, and labyrinthine alleys that conform to the steep gradient. A major feature of Fira is the old port (Gialos), accessible via 587 steps, by cable car, or traditionally by mule. The Archaeological Museum of Fira houses significant artifacts from the ancient city of Akrotiri, famously known as the 'Greek Pompeii.' From the town's numerous vantage points, one can enjoy unparalleled views of the Nea Kameni volcano and the deep blue Aegean Sea. Despite extensive tourism, Fira maintains its cultural significance through important religious sites like the Orthodox Cathedral of Ypapanti. The town functions as the primary transportation hub for the entire island's infrastructure.
