Ancient Thera (Greece)

Weather…

Ancient Thera is an antique city strategically located on the 360-meter-high Mesa Vouno mountain on the island of Santorini. Founded in the 9th century BC by Dorian settlers from Sparta led by Theras, the city remained inhabited until the early Byzantine period. Its prominent location offered an excellent defensive position and control over the maritime routes of the southern Aegean. Excavations have revealed an impressive urban layout featuring an 800-meter-long main street, a theater overlooking the sea, temples, and an agora. Of particular interest are the rock-cut inscriptions, which are among the earliest examples of the Greek alphabet. During the Ptolemaic period, the city served as an important naval base. Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins while enjoying the spectacular panoramic views over the island and the Aegean Sea that once defined the strategic significance of this site.
