Bongo Hills

The Bongo Hills are located in the Upper East Region of Ghana, famous for their unique landscape of massive granite boulders and inselbergs. These geological structures were formed by the weathering and erosion of Precambrian granite, defining the physical identity of the Bongo District. The hills hold deep cultural and spiritual significance for the local Gurunsi people, who revere many of the rock formations as ancestral shrines. Vegetation in this semi-arid region is sparse, consisting primarily of Sudan savanna with scattered baobab and acacia trees. In the narrow valleys between the rocks, residents practice intensive subsistence farming, with millet and sorghum as the staple crops. The distinctive local architecture, featuring rounded mud-walled compounds, aesthetically mirrors the spherical granite formations of the environment. Tourism is gradually growing in the Bongo Hills, attracted by hiking opportunities and the preservation of traditional customs. Geologically, they are part of the ancient Leo-Man Shield, one of West Africa's oldest crustal blocks.
