Eisfeld is a historic town in the Hildburghausen district of Thuringia, located on the easy on the eye southwestern slopes of the Thuringian Highland. The Werra River flows through the town, marking the start of its long journey toward the North Sea. The cultural centerpiece of Eisfeld is its castle, a former residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Hildburghausen, which now houses the town museum and a memorial to the writer Otto Ludwig. Born in Eisfeld, Ludwig was a prominent figure of 19th-century German realism, and his legacy remains central to the town's identity. Architecturally, the late-Gothic St. Nicholas Church is another major landmark, showcasing fine craftsmanship from the Middle Ages.
