Festival of the tradition-rich toy town with a teddy bear and doll market, celebrating the region's centuries-old toy-making tradition.
Positioned on the southern slopes of the Thuringian Forest, this town forged an international reputation as a global capital of toys. Around 1913, local manufacturing accounted for roughly 20 percent of all toys traded on the world market. This extensive crafting heritage is maintained at the German Toy Museum, established in 1901, which houses over 100,000 artifacts ranging from antiquity to modern times. A standout exhibition piece is the "Thüringer Kirmes" (Thuringian Fair), an incredibly detailed 1910 diorama featuring near-life-size figures. The architectural layout of the town center is heavily influenced by the 1845 Neo-Gothic town hall situated on the main market square. Operating on the Erlenwasen hill above the settlement is the Sonneberg Observatory, built in 1925; it draws researchers and amateur astronomers alike due to its possession of the world's largest photographic plate archive of the night sky. The municipal park provides shaded walking paths parallel to the Röthen stream. Model railway enthusiasts instantly connect the town with the PIKO company, which still maintains its headquarters here. Every September, the large doll market draws collectors from across the continent.
