Arnstadt, located just south of Erfurt, holds the distinction of being the oldest town in Thuringia, with its first recorded mention dating back to 704 AD. The town is internationally celebrated as a 'Bach City'; it was here in 1703 that a young Johann Sebastian Bach secured his first professional post as an organist at the New Church (now the Bach Church). Its well-preserved historic center features medieval architecture, including the impressive Renaissance town hall and the imposing ruins of Neideck Castle. A unique cultural highlight is the 'Mon Plaisir' doll town collection in the New Palace, a Baroque masterpiece showcasing 18th-century life through hundreds of intricate miniatures. Situated on the Gera River at the foothills of the Thuringian Forest, Arnstadt serves as an excellent base for outdoor activities. Today, the town is also a thriving economic engine for the region, housing the 'Erfurter Kreuz' industrial park, one of the most significant investment sites in East Germany, specializing in logistics, automotive engineering, and renewable energy.
