Water temperature…
Tucked into the Ilm river valley at the edge of the Thuringian Forest, this small town features one of the largest market squares in the entire region. The nearly one-hectare square plaza is framed by well-kept burgher houses and the town hall, which received its current facade during an 1895 renovation. The most imposing structure in the settlement is the 1893 viaduct (Stadtilmer Viadukt), a massive 200-meter-long limestone railway bridge that spans the valley and supports the Arnstadt-Saalfeld train line. Rising in the center is the Protestant St. Marien church, originally a Romanesque pillared basilica containing a remarkably preserved 12th-century crypt. Concealed beneath the large market square is the Zitzmannshöhle, a medieval cellar system that points to the town's extensive brewing history. During the 19th century, shoe manufacturing became a major local industry, a transition documented in the local history museum on the market. Paralleling the river is the popular Ilm Valley Cycle Path (Ilmtal-Radweg), steering riders through gentle floodplain landscapes. A calendar highlight is the May spring festival, which draws regional craftsmen and musicians to the expansive central plaza.
