💡 Tips

  • For the best photos of the pier and the resort architecture, it's worth getting up early to catch the morning light.
  • Rent a bicycle to explore the surroundings, for example, a trip to the Granitz hunting lodge or the treetop walk in Prora.
  • Parking in the centre is difficult. Use the large car parks on the outskirts of town and the local shuttle service (Bäderbahn).
  • A ride on the historic 'Rasender Roland' steam train is an experience in itself and connects Binz with other seaside resorts like Sellin and Göhren.
  • Walk off the main street to discover the full variety of the classic resort architecture in the quieter side streets.

Binz is the heart of Rügen island and world-famous for its 'Resort Architecture' (Bäderarchitektur). The white villas with their ornate wooden balconies from the turn of the century give the town an unmistakable elegance. The center is anchored by the grand Kurhaus on the beach promenade, flanked by the 370-meter-long pier. The fine sandy beach in the Prorer Wiek bay stretches for five kilometers and is exceptionally sheltered from the wind. A must-do is a ride on the 'Rasender Roland,' a historic narrow-gauge steam train connecting Binz with other resorts and the Granitz Hunting Lodge. The lodge sits atop Tempelberg hill, offering panoramic views of almost the entire island from its central tower. North of Binz lies the 'Colossus of Prora,' a 4.5-kilometer-long building complex from the Nazi era, now serving as a documentation center and residential area. The Schmachter See promenade inland provides a peaceful alternative to the bustling Baltic beachfront.
