Marienberg, situated in the Ore Mountains of Saxony, stands as a prime example of a planned Renaissance mining town. It was established in 1521 by Duke Henry the Pious following the discovery of significant silver deposits in the vicinity. The town's layout is famously centered around a massive square marketplace, approximately one hectare in size, from which streets radiate in a strict grid pattern. This architectural design represents the early modern well-suited of urban planning. For centuries, silver mining dictated the town's fortunes, a legacy preserved in the grand St. Mary's Church, the last of the great late Gothic hall churches in Saxony. Following the decline of mining, Marienberg transitioned into a garrison town and later a regional industrial and tourism hub. Today, it serves as a gateway to the Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors are drawn to its historic fortifications, such as the Zschopauer Tor, and its spirited traditions, including the annual miners' parades that celebrate the town's deep-rooted connection to the earth's riches.
