Zschopau is located in the Zschopau River valley in the Ore Mountains of Saxony. The town gained international fame in the 20th century as a global hub for motorcycle manufacturing. In 1922, Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen began producing DKW motorcycles here, leading Zschopau to house the world's largest motorcycle factory by the 1930s. After WWII, the factory operated under the MZ brand, becoming a leader in two-stroke technology and achieving significant success in international racing. Dominating the skyline is Wildeck Castle, founded in the 12th century to secure the historic Salt Route. Today, the castle hosts an extensive motorcycle museum documenting the town's mechanical heritage. Geographically, Zschopau is surrounded by the typical dense forests and steep hills of the central Ore Mountains, attracting hikers and mountain bikers. While heavy manufacturing has evolved since 1990, the local economy remains focused on metalworking and automotive supplies. The town center features architectural gems such as the late-Gothic St. Martin's Church, reflecting its long history as a center for mining and textiles.
