Highlights of 2026

1

The old Hanseatic city of Salzwedel is located in the northwest of the Altmark and is an excellently preserved center of northern German brick Gothic and traditional half-timbered architecture. A walk through the historic center leads along the small branches of the Jeetze river, past magnificent merchant houses and the two large brick churches, St. Marien and St. Katharinen, which document the wealth of the former Hanseatic era. A striking testament to the city's fortifications is the massive Neuperver Tor gate from the fifteenth century. However, the town achieved worldwide fame through a culinary specialty: the Salzwedeler Baumkuchen (tree cake). This layered cake is still traditionally baked over an open flame on a rotating spit in several local manufactories today. Visitors can directly observe the elaborate production process in the demonstration bakeries and taste the pastry fresh. Salzwedel's green surroundings, with old forests and quiet country roads, are well suited for extended bicycle excursions towards the Drömling Nature Park or the Wendland region. Salzwedel has a very compact, pedestrian-friendly old town structure where medieval trade history and living baking artistry meet in a small space.
