The twin town of Oranienbaum-Wörlitz combines two outstanding estates of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wörlitz is the center of this landscape architecture marvel, characterized by the Wörlitz Park. Created in the late eighteenth century, this was the first English-style landscape garden on the European mainland and captivates visitors with an extensive system of lakes, canals, neoclassical bridges, and temples. Visitors can explore the park authentically by taking a gondola ride across the Wörlitz Lake. A few kilometers away lies Oranienbaum, which features a fascinating contrast: here, the Dutch-born Princess Henriette Catharina had a strictly geometric Baroque ensemble of castle, town, and park built based on Dutch models. Oranienbaum Castle impresses with its original gilded leather wallpaper and the historic orangery, which is one of the longest in Europe. The two localities are connected by historic avenues and old dikes that are good for extended cycling tours through the Elbe floodplains. The area gives a dense concentration of architectural history, ranging from Dutch Baroque to the Enlightenment art of classicism.
