The town of Oberharz am Brocken is an amalgamation of several mountain villages and climatic health resorts stretching across the densely forested area of the central Harz mountains. Among the most famous districts is Rübeland, renowned for the fascinating dripstone caves Baumannshöhle and Hermannshöhle, as well as Benneckenstein with its traditional station of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways. Steam trains regularly chug through the spruce forests here, connecting the districts with one another and with the eponymous Brocken massif. Another engineering highlight of the region is the massive Rappbode Dam, whose barrier is the highest in Germany. Right next to it, the Titan RT suspension bridge spans the deep Bode valley, offering those with a head for heights an expansive view over the reservoir. During the winter months, localities like Hasselfelde and Schierke become focal points for cross-country skiers and winter hikers, while in summer, a wide network of well-marked hiking trails opens up the terrain. The architecture in the villages is often defined by dark wooden facades and steep slate roofs, designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions of the low mountain range. The region stands for active recreation amidst rugged mountain nature dissected by deep valleys.
