Bad Lauchstädt is located in the Saalekreis district of Saxony-Anhalt and is officially designated as a 'Goethe Town'. Its rise to prominence began in 1700 with the discovery of a medicinal mineral spring, which quickly turned the town into a fashionable spa resort for the Saxon court in Dresden. The town's cultural zenith was reached under the influence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who directed the local theater from 1791. In 1802, the Goethe Theater was built according to his visions; it remains the only originally preserved theater building from the Weimar Classicism era. The historic spa facilities, including the Kurpark, the bathhouse, and the elegant arcades, represent a masterpiece of Baroque and Neoclassical design. Modern Bad Lauchstädt is a lively center for culture and tourism, while also hosting small-scale industrial and agricultural businesses. Its proximity to the A38 and A14 motorways makes it easily accessible. The tradition of mineral water production continues with the 'Lauchstädter Heilbrunnen', which is bottled and distributed throughout Germany.
