Könnern is a historic town in the Salzlandkreis district of Saxony-Anhalt, situated on the edge of the fertile Magdeburger Börde plains. Its recorded history dates back to 1004, and its growth has been intrinsically linked to the surrounding landscape. The town is a cornerstone of the regional sugar industry, hosting a large-scale sugar beet processing plant that dominates the local landscape and economy. Historically, Könnern also thrived due to lignite mining and its proximity to the salt deposits that give the district its name.
