Annaburg is a historic town in eastern Saxony-Anhalt, set within the expansive forested landscape of the Annaburg Heath. The town's destiny changed in 1573 when it was renamed from Lochau to Annaburg in honor of Electress Anna of Saxony, who commissioned the construction of a grand Renaissance castle there. Annaburg Castle remains the town's architectural centerpiece, standing as one of the most significant Renaissance structures in the region and now housing a local history museum. Electress Anna was a notable figure of her time, known for her expertise in medicine and botany; she established extensive herb gardens and a castle pharmacy that were famous throughout Germany. For centuries, the town served as a favorite hunting retreat for the Saxon electors, owing to the game-rich forests surrounding it. Today, Annaburg gives a peaceful atmosphere with a focus on its regal heritage. The neighboring Annaburg Heath provides an extensive network of trails for hikers and cyclists, exploring one of the largest contiguous forest areas in central Germany.
