Jüterbog is a historic gem located in the heart of the Fläming region, south of Berlin. Established as a city in 1174, it quickly rose to prominence as a vital trade hub and a member of the Hanseatic League. The town's most striking feature is its nearly complete medieval defense system, including three massive gate towers that once protected its wealth. Jüterbog holds a special place in world history as a focal point of the Reformation; it was the activities of the indulgence preacher Johann Tetzel in this very town that prompted Martin Luther to draft his revolutionary theses. The skyline is defined by the magnificent Gothic Saint Nicholas Church and the Town Hall, one of the oldest in Brandenburg. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the city served as a major garrison town, leading to the construction of extensive military complexes. Today, Jüterbog is not only a cultural destination but also a hub for active tourism, being a central node for the 'Fläming-Skate' network, which gives hundreds of kilometers of smooth paths for skating and cycling through the scenic countryside.
