Located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Zülpich is deeply rooted in ancient history, formerly known as Tolbiac where the Frankish King Clovis I famously fought the Alemanni in 496 AD. Today, the Römerthermen Zülpich, Museum of Bathing Culture has an incredibly preserved look into ancient Roman baths directly in the town center, showcasing authentic 2nd-century heating systems. The historical core is still surrounded by formidable medieval walls featuring four surviving town gates, including the massive Cologne Gate which dates back to the late 14th century. Just outside the historical center, the Zülpicher See provides a modern contrast. Created from a former lignite mine and revitalized during the 2014 state garden show, this lake is now a hub for sailing, windsurfing, and relaxing on the sandy beach. The transition from ancient stone ruins to the active waterfront makes it a highly varied destination. Visitors can easily spend the morning exploring the local archaeological exhibits and the remains of the Kurkölnische Landesburg, before walking or cycling along the flat trails of the Zülpicher Börde landscape in the afternoon.
