Nideggen is a pretty town in the Düren district, situated on a rocky plateau high above the Rur Valley in the North Eifel region. The town's history is inextricably linked to Nideggen Castle, which was built in the 12th century by the Counts of Jülich. This formidable fortress served as a strategic powerhouse and temporary ducal residence, hosting kings and emperors over the centuries. The old town is characterized by its well-preserved half-timbered houses and historic town gates made of local red sandstone. Its geographic location on the edge of the Eifel National Park makes Nideggen a major hub for tourism and outdoor activities like hiking and rock climbing. The lively red sandstone cliffs are a defining feature of the local landscape. Despite sustaining heavy damage during World War II, the historic core was meticulously rebuilt, and the town is now a state-recognized resort, known for its medieval atmosphere and striking natural surroundings.
