Erftstadt was established in 1969 as part of a regional reorganization, merging several historically significant towns and villages such as Lechenich, Liblar, and Gymnich. Located in the Cologne Lowland and at the edge of the Rhineland Nature Park, the city is named after the Erft river. The region's history is deeply connected to its numerous water castles, which were once defensive structures in the marshy Erft valley. Notable sites include Gracht Castle and Gymnich Castle, the latter having served as a guest house for the German federal government. Historically, the local economy was tied to agriculture and lignite mining, but today it is a thriving residential and service hub, benefiting from its proximity to Cologne. The city faced a significant natural disaster in 2021 when extreme flooding caused a massive landslide in the Blessem district, leading to international attention and extensive reconstruction efforts.
