Wetter (Ruhr) is a historic town in the Ennepe-Ruhr district, profoundly shaped by its pivotal role in the early industrial age. Located along the northern slopes of the Ruhr valley, the town overlooks Lake Harkortsee, a large reservoir created for industrial and recreational purposes. It is famously known as the home of Friedrich Harkort, a pioneer of the German machine industry who established his workshops in the ruins of Wetter Castle in 1819. The 'Burgfreiheit' area remains a testament to its medieval past, featuring pleasant timber-framed and slate-clad buildings that once housed the counts of the Mark.
