Herdecke is situated between the two large reservoirs Hengsteysee and Harkortsee in the Ruhr valley. The town in the Ennepe-Ruhr district is primarily known for the 30-meter-high Ruhr Viaduct, an imposing 19th-century railway bridge that spans the river valley.
