Übach-Palenberg is located in the Heinsberg district, right on the border with the Netherlands. The city history is inextricably linked to coal mining, especially the Carolus Magnus colliery, which was operational from 1911 to 1962. After the mining era ended, the city underwent a successful structural change into a modern industrial and service location. Geographically, the cityscape is defined by the Wurm valley, which now serves as a local recreation area and provides numerous hiking and cycling trails. Culturally, the city features a wide spectrum through the Carolus Magnus Center and various art projects in public spaces. The architecture shows an interesting mix of former miners settlements and modern residential areas. Its proximity to the cities of Aachen and Heerlen also makes Übach-Palenberg an attractive place to live for commuters in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
