Geilenkirchen is located in the southern part of the Heinsberg district in North Rhine-Westphalia, tucked away within the scenic Wurm Valley. The town's history stretches back to the Frankish period, with its first official mention appearing in the 12th century. Today, Geilenkirchen is internationally recognized primarily for the NATO Air Base Teveren, which serves as the home base for the E-3A Component's AWACS surveillance fleet. This military presence infuses the city with a unique multicultural atmosphere, as personnel from various NATO nations reside here with their families. Geographically, the area is defined by fertile loess soils and the riparian landscapes of the Wurm River, making it a popular spot for outdoor activities. Historical landmarks such as Burg Trips, a classic water castle, and Leerodt Castle showcase the region's aristocratic heritage. The local economy is bolstered by the NATO installation alongside a robust sector of medium-sized enterprises in metalworking and logistics. Its proximity to the Dutch border and its role as a regional service hub make Geilenkirchen a vital link in the border triangle of Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
