Positioned gracefully on the banks of the Ems River, Telgte is one of the most prominent and deeply revered pilgrimage towns in the Münsterland region. Its spiritual heart is the elegant octagonal Pilgrimage Chapel (Gnadenkapelle), which houses a famous 14th-century Pietà, drawing thousands of devotees and curious travelers alike each year. Beyond its religious significance, Telgte has an impeccably restored medieval old town featuring narrow, winding streets, cobblestone squares, and robust half-timbered architecture. A major highlight for visitors is RELíGIO, the Westphalian Museum for Religious Culture, which provides fascinating insights into local faith traditions and history. The surrounding Ems floodplain (Emsaue) provides a tranquil environment for leisurely walks, peaceful bike rides, and relaxing afternoons by the water. The town is also renowned for its large annual Mariä-Geburts-Markt, a massive traditional folk festival and market that transforms the area into a lively celebration. With its rich cultural tapestry and serene riverside setting, Telgte promises a deeply fulfilling and peaceful escape.
