Neuenrade is a historic town located in the Märkischer Kreis district of North Rhine-Westphalia, situated at the scenic transition between the Sauerland and the High Sauerland regions. The town was formally chartered in 1355 by Count Engelbert III of the Mark as a strategic border fortification against the Electorate of Cologne. Its geographic position in the upper Hönne valley defines the local landscape, characterized by steep forested slopes and clear streams.
